Um, I have terrible skin. On a scale of 1 to atrocious, it falls right in the I’ll tease you with 1-2 good days, every three months, but after that I’m gonna be the worst. It’s not awesome.
I have Rosacea. And, I guess you can say I have a semi-milder case of it , so I should consider myself lucky there. But, not having good skin is THE WORST no matter what the degree. Rosacea is painful and doesn’t make you feel so awesome when its being a total bitch and flaring up at all the wrong times (weddings, holidays, important meetings…).
I’ve learned my triggers: Red Wine, Wheat Beer, Mold, dust, the changes in seasons, excessive heat…we have four fireplaces and those are like the worst things for my skin, so they will probably never be used more than a couple of times. If I end up in a trigger situation, my skin goes from I think I have this under control to I’m on fire! I’m on fire! And, I need to apply 18 gallons of moisturizer, 16 times a day for at least a week until it goes back to normal. It hurts, it’s RED and it’s dry as the dessert. Not awesome.
Rosacea is one of those tricky little skin disorders that doesn’t have a “cure”. And, what helps one person is like poison to another..and that is most true in the products you apply to your skin! I had found a really good system, so when the folks over at Purlisse asked me to try their skincare products; I was a bit gun shy. But, I took the risk and am SO HAPPY I did. Here’s the skinny.
Purlisse is beauty through Asian wisdom. Its creator, Jennifer Yen developed the line after years of heavy makeup use – ever heard of Power Rangers? Well, she was one of the villainesses. The fire breathing one. While she may have been battling it on the screen, wearing heavy makeup for 15 hours per day was killing her skin. She developed psoriasis, adult acne, hives and rosacea.
So what does a TV villainess do when things aren’t going her way? She kicks ass.
Tapping into the marvel that was her Grandma’s beauty wisdom (have you met the legendary Blue Lotus and skin-defending White Tea combo?), she set out to fix her own skin damage and share it with the world, with a simple mission to preserve youth, protect beauty and prevent skin aging.
No harsh ingredients, parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, synthetic color/fragrance and its cruelty free. Just a whole lotta’ awesomeness.
MY NEW SKINCARE SQUAD
As I mentioned, I’ve had my Rosacea pretty well under control these last couple of years. But, if I’m honest, I wasn’t thrilled with the way my face looked on the daily or what I was putting on it. I just knew that it worked. And, quite honestly, if pouring gasoline on my face would make my skin be its okay-est self? I totally would’ve done it. But that all changed for me last week. Here’s what I’m doing now…
Step 1: MOISTURIZE
After I shower, I immediately have to apply a moisturizer. And, I have to do it while my skin is still damp. I was using Avene Cream for Intolerant Skin, but like all products I love, they changed the recipe and the only thing that worked after that was Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture for Sensitive Skin. But times they are a changin’ girl.
As of this very moment, I’m now using Purlisse Blue Lotus Essential Daily Moisturizer (SPF 30) for normal – dry – sensitive skin.
I’m making the switch to this moisturizer because I absolutely love the way it feels on my skin. I can tell in 2 seconds if a product is going to trigger my Rosacea and this had one key impact on that – an absolutely glorious one. And, I haven’t been able to use a moisturizer with an SPF in years. Most of the time it immediately dries me out. This one? Perfection. Keeps my skin feeling soft and far from dry.
And, I mean, it makes sense. This product is filled with BLUE LOTUS (known for its anti-inflammatory benefits), White Tea (skin calming), Soy Protein (soft skin), Algae Extracts (moisture retention), and Vitamin E (anti-aging and skin texture awesomeness)
Price: The 1.7oz / 50 ml bottle is not cheap – at $55 bucks a pop. You can save $6 bucks by subscribing (every 2 months is most common). I’m not sure how long this will last me…I assume a couple of months. I literally need about a pea size drop of it one time per day. So, I’m thinkin’ it will last. In comparison to the Avene (Retail $38 bucks) and the Neutrogena (Retail $10 for 4 oz., holy crap), this is pricy. But, I personally am willing to pay the price for healthy skin.
STEP 2: MOISTURIZE (AGAIN)
Did I mention I have horribly dry skin? Before I put my make up on I have to moisturize again. I found Crude products a couple of years ago and have no plans on abandoning the fabulous Everything Oil I use on the daily (I’m just using it at night now). So, in place of my a.m. use of that I’m swapping out the Purlisse BB Tinted Moist Cream (SPF 30).
I have tried about 50 thousand BB creams and tinted creams and have failed epically every single time. This is quite honestly the first one I have EVER tried that doesn’t dry me out or look like I took a paint brush to my face. And, it’s free of retinol – hallelujah!!!
This BB features an exclusive Asian Herb extracts complex, Chamomile & Artemisia (skin soothing) and Sugar Maple (happy skin, moisture and glow). It actually moisturizes AND provides a layer of coverage so lightweight that it actually blends into my skin instead of resting on top of it. I couldn’t say more positive things about this cream. I’m so very in love with it.
Pic below isn’t the best quality, but the tone/color of my skin is just as smooth now as it (sorta) looks below. This product evens out my skin tone and covers up the yuck parts in a way that feels like it’s not even there. Legit. Retails: $35 bucks for 1.4 oz. /40 ml.
Note: If I’m going to be outside a lot during the day I add a layer of Blue Lizard SPF 30 which is the holy grail of sunscreens for me and my fair skinned baby girl.
STEP 3: MAKE UP
Before I do anything, I apply this Daily Lip Nourisher with Mango & Shea Butter (Retail: $16 bucks). I probably wouldn’t pay $16 bucks for a lip moisturizer, but I have it in my possession and have to say my lips are the softest in the land.
But, more importantly…Guess what? I no longer have to use a foundation. With rosacea you’ve got to have 50 layers of stuff on your skin to protect it from your environmental triggers (wind, sun…) and for me, it’s always been one of those things I HATE. Like, I really hate caking on foundation to try to even out my redness and also protect myself from a Rosacea attack. I grew to just accept the fact that I had to wear a bunch of makeup on my skin and that was that. So, I wasn’t entirely convinced that skipping the foundation (the only thing that worked for me was L’Oréal True Match Roller) was going to work. Guess what? It does. All I need is my new lover: The Purlisse BB Tinted Moist Cream I bragged about above.
I use less than a pea size drop of it to cover my whole face. Then, I just brush on a bit of bronzer (I like this one), some eyeliner (got it in my Wantable Make Up Collection), mascara (thanks Beautycon!), attempt to tame my brows with some Brow Envy and call it done.
I’ve given it an entire week+ and I’ve had zero problems. In fact, a couple of people have even mentioned that my skin looked “really good”. Which is kind of annoying because I know my skin looks crappy and when people say things look really good you know it’s because they are used to seeing something that looks really not good. But, that’s life. And, it’s truth.
Anyway – I even had a couple of days that I was outside in the yard a bit longer than I thought I’d be without applying my Blue Lizard and NO BURN. Not even a hint of a burn. To say I’m obsessed is an understatement. This is a life changing switch for me. I might have to hop on a plane, stalk Jen Yen and give her one of those really long, awkward hugs whereby no one knows when the hug should end, but both are incredibly ready for the hug to end.
STEP 4: FACE WASH
Um, when do I wash my face? You’re going to hate me. Estheticians and dermatologists everywhere are going to shutter when I say these next 5 words. I don’t wash my face. You’re probably going to think I’m gross. But, if you were me and you had my skin and you tried every single cleanser in the land, and every single time your face felt like it was going to burn off? You wouldn’t wash your face either. I mean, I cleanse it gently with good ol’ fashion H20, but I don’t use a soap or cleanser on it if I know what’s good for me.
Nonetheless, I tried the Purlisse BLUE LOTUS 4-in-1 Cleansing Milk because I said I would. It took me three days to work up the courage to try it, but I did and I wasn’t mad at it. It felt soft and gentle on my skin, which was already a win based upon my history with cleansers. And, it didn’t immediately dry out my skin (which is historically how cleansing goes down in my life).
But, the day I used it, I noticed my skin felt drier, not like the Sahara dry, but definitely dryer and less happy than it had been the preceding days using the other Purlisse products. So, that’s as far as I got. And, I don’t intend to try it out and see what happens. Because I’m really, really happy with my skin right now and I don’t feel like crying (OMG, tears are THE WORST for rosacea, p.s.). If you are looking for a really nice feeling cleanser though? This might be for you. Retail: $36 bucks for 5.07 oz. /150ml.
STEP 5: 800TH MOISTUREIZING OF THE DAY
Since I’m no longer using my Crude Essential Oil in the a.m., I’m giving my face a delicious treat in the evening before bed and slathering on some of this fabulous oil that I’ve also grown to love so much (I’ve been using it for just shy of 2 years and it’s also changed my life). I can’t cleanse with this either if I want to keep my skin intact, but as moisture treat, it’s the BOMB.com (100% organic Essential Oil ingredients).
Are you ready for this? Because this is everything: These products have just changed my skincare game in the most epic ways and I am forever grateful to Purlisse for seeking me out and sharing this line with me. I was nervous to try them. But, when I read up on the products and saw that they were sans so many of the harsh ingredients that typically made my life a literal hell, I knew I had to throw the chips up in the air and let them fall as they may. And, it was the best decision evs.
