Hey, hey road trip people! I’ve been wanting to do this post forevs because we are in the car A LOT. When you live out of state and almost every single member of your family lives elsewhere you take a lot of road trips. And that means you need healthy road trip snacks (lots of em’).
While we fly on occasion, we spend most of our time travelin’ in the car. So, I feel like I’ve become a fairly good expert on how to road trip like a boss. Which includes easy, healthy road trip snacks for you and the entire fam.
If you’ve been following along, we’re eating Keto right now. So, this particular trip took lots of extra planning to ensure I had Keto friendly foods on hand in the car and in my hotel for regular meals. My daughter is not Keto, but we do try to limit unhealthy sugars and carbs for her.
Hopefully, this will give lots of ideas for your next road trip, whether you’re eating Keto or just trying to keep it healthy.
ROAD TRIP MEAL PREP
Before I dive into the snacks, I want to quickly show ya what I brought for some of my meals while out of town to keep me from accidentally eating the wrong type of food for my current diet.
I brought these Bacon, Egg & Veggie muffins for breakfast. Super filling, super easy to make, pack and heat up on the go. I also made up this Keto friendly Bread, which I could eat in the car if I felt super hungry and needed more than a quick snack. I pre-packaged mini “charcuterie” lunches for myself, which included some Salami, Sharp Cheddar Cheese and mixed nuts (almonds, Macadamias, Cashews, etc.).
I also prepared salad stuff just in case there wasn’t anything keto-friendly to eat where I was visiting. I just put 2 cups of spinach in a ziplock bag and pre-packed the fixings (a couple of cherry tomatoes, some bacon, some blue cheese). I brought my own dressing (this Green Goddess by Vital Kitchen), but I usually just throw on a couple of tablespoons of EVOO & some salt. I brought my own pink salt, p.s.
HEALTHY ROAD TRIP SNACKS FOR MAMA
The hubs and I split up for this last trip. He had a conference in Chicago and I was off to Upstate NY to see my family. For snacks, I brought pre-portioned macadamia nuts and moon cheese. My daughter loves moon cheese too – SO. GOOD.
I also brought some DANG coconut chips (no sugar added) and pre-portioned those as well so I wouldn’t feel pressed to eat the entire bag because they are so insanely delish. These Vermont Mini Beef & Pork Sticks and Uncured Pepperoni also made the trip.
Oh, and PS if you use coconut oil on the daily like I do, these Coconut Oil Packets from Trader Joe’s are a life saver.
I popped a couple cans of my favorite bubbly water in the cooler (La Croix Strawberry & Pineapple holy wow).
And, I premade these Sugar Free Almond Butter Blondies to cure my sweet tooth when everyone I was visiting was eating “real dessert”. My daughter LOVES these and they are filled with healthy fats!
HEALTHY ROAD TRIP SNACKS FOR KIDS
My daughter ate most of what I brought for myself, but she’s four, so one second she loves it and the next she hates it. So, I’m all about easy, healthy options when we’re on the road. I pack a mini cooler so I can easily pass stuff to her when she demands it, because do four year old’s ever ask for anything politely?
OMG the cucumber in the pic above looks like it’s been abused. Whatever. I cut up a bunch of cukes and carrots and threw in a couple single serve Hummus and Guacs for easy dips. Cheese sticks are always in the mix along with no sugar added Yogurt, veggie and fruit pouches. I also cut up oranges and apples. Obviously she doesn’t eat all of this, but I’m all about options so I don’t want to stop, drop and roll out of my car on the interstate.
Even though we try to limit her carbs and processed sugar, I always bring a few crunchies along for the ride. Annies has some great mini bags of yum and Somersaults are pretty much the most delicious thing ever. Raisins offer up a fair amount of quiet time if she eats them one by one and as last-ditch effort, she gets a “cookie” – also known as a protein bar.
