The plant-based skincare routine I can’t live without (4+ years strong!)

Oh, hi.  My skin is a jerk.  I’ve had skin problems for years – not so much acne, but lots of redness, dryness, and sensitivity (Rosacea will do that to a girl).  I got a handle on my skincare routine a couple of years ago and have to say that my skin is it’s happiest it’s ever been!

MY GO TO SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR DRY, RED SKIN

Since I just placed an order and received two of the products I use religiously, I thought now was a great time to share in case you’re also looking for some skincare magic.

The plant-based skincare routine I can't live without

If you follow along, you’ve heard me talk about CRUDE before.  I linked up to them in my 5-minute makeup post and another post all about the moisturizers I use on my skin.  All of their products are plant-based, detergent-free and soapless.  If you have crappy skin, you know first hand (as do I) that detergents, soaps and other products packed with weird ingredients can reek havoc on your skin. So, when I stumbled upon these guys 4+ years ago, I was STOKED that the products worked so well for me.  And, ever since then they’ve been the headliners of my daily skincare routine.

DRY SKIN IS MY ARCH NEMESIS

Dry skin is my worst problem – I can handle the redness and occasional breakout (hormonal or food based) – but the dry skin is the absolute worst.  Because when you’re skin is dry and flaking off, there is NOTHING you can do to fix it.

You can load up on the moisture, but as soon as you put any makeup on your skin, or your skin is environmentally charged by temperature, food, or tears, you’re a gonner.  It’s embarrassing, and flakey and just doesn’t feel awesome.

ESSENTIAL OILS GAVE ME MY SKIN BACK

I’m not an avid essential oils gal, mostly because I have cats and they are so toxic for them.  But, when I first heard of Crude (back when Michelle Money was on the Bachelor – it’s her sister’s brand), I thought I’d give it a try.  Why not?  I had tried everything else!  Michelle (first name, what up?) shared a video about oil cleansing and because I’m a sucker for every infomercial ever made (just ask my storage closet), I went all in.

I purchased the Oil Cleansing Starter Kit which came with Everything Oil (now called CLEANSE) and a bunch of microfiber cloths.  I found out quickly that my skin DID NOT like the microfiber, so oil cleansing was out.  BUT, I immediately noticed that my skin didn’t feel as flaky as it normally did.  So, I kept using the oil as a moisturizer.  And, I kept on and kept on and kept on because for the first time in years, I had a face that didn’t look like the scales of a fish.  And, for the first time, I had an actual skincare routine – prior to that it was a “throw a product on my face and pray to the skin gods I wouldn’t want to amputate my own head” routine.  I’m dramatic.  I know.  But, the struggle is real.

INGREDIENTS IN CLEANSE

SUNFLOWER OIL – moisturizer, vitamin E + betacarotene (antioxidants), helps fight acne, reduces signs of aging, using it regularly helps remove dead skin cells, soothing + healing
SAFFLOWER OIL – rich in beneficial linoleic acid, fights acne, wrinkles and dry skin, enhances wound healing

GRAPEFRUIT ESSENTIAL OIL – treats acne, prevents oily skin
YLANG-YLANG ESSENTIAL OIL – balances oil, soothes irritation & inflammation
BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL – natural cleanser, removes dirt & impurities, unclogs pores, balances oily skin

OH, AND I WASH MY FACE NOW

In the past year (maybe two) I got hooked on their body wash + lotion (aka WASH). I’m pretty sure WASH is meant for your entire body, and I’ve done that, but most recently (like, this year?) I started using it on my face. Prior to that?  I didn’t wash my face. Like, I DID NOT EVER wash my face.

Not because I’m gross.  But because most cleansers have ingredients that literally turn my face into a raging, firey, skin-mask.  WASH doesn’t do that.  It actually cleanses my skin, removes my makeup and ADDS moisture without creating anything yucky at all.  No burning, tight-skin feeling or yuck.

INGREDIENTS IN WASH

ALOE VERA – protective layer helps retain moisture, rich in antioxidants + minerals, speeds up healing, anti-inflammatory
DISTILLED WATER – good for face washing because it’s closer to your skin’s PH than tap water
SUNFLOWER OIL – moisturizer, vitamin E + betacarotene (antioxidants), helps fight acne, reduces signs of aging, using it regularly helps remove dead skin cells, soothing + healingLEUCONOSTOC/RADISH ROOT FERMENT FILTRATE
LACTOBACILLUS & COCONUT FRUIT EXTRACT – rich in skin conditioning fatty acids, proteins + complex B vitamins

GUAR GUM – thickening agent
BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL – natural cleanser, removes dirt & impurities, unclogs pores, balances oily skin
GRAPEFRUIT ESSENTIAL OIL – treats acne, prevents oily skin
LIME ESSENTIAL OIL – smells pretty.  Haha.  I can’t find any other added benefit, but I could be missing something!
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL – calming, relaxing, anti-aging antioxidant rich

MY COMPLETE SKINCARE ROUTINE

AM Shower:

Wash my face with WASH.  When I get out of the shower, I immediately massage about a dime-sized amount of CLEANSE into my skin (while it’s still moist).  I never dry my face coming out of the shower (a trick my dermatologist taught me)! I let the oils rest on my face while I get dressed and blow dry my hair.

Before Makeup:

Before I put on my makeup (dry contour powders), I add more moisture – I just started using the DeVita Revitalizing Eye Lift Creme (I tap a teeny amount under my eyes and on my lids).  I also use a small amount of Purlisse Blue Lotus Moisturizer (SPF 30) and, while its still “wet” (I’m not sure what other word to use here), I apply the third and final layer of moisture – Purlisse Blue Lotus Moisturizer Purlisse products are NOT plant-based, but they are cruelty-free and vegan.  They are created based upon Asian beauty secrets and are THE BOMB.

Night Routine:

I don’t have a crazy nighttime routine.  I never wash my face at night (too much for my skin if I’m cleansing in the a.m.).  If I’m feeling dry (especially in the winter), I apply a little more CLEANSE  before bed.  And, if I remember, I add a bit more of the DeVita Revitalizing Eye Lift Creme
